Blair Bryant’s latest CD “Red Tiger” is taking his bass where no man has gone before. Named after his hit- making custom red 6 string lead bass, “Red Tiger” is an uber-sophisticated jazz listening experience for folks who want more fusion, funk and soul in their ears.This third, full-length LP and latest since the release of Cerulean Blue in 2018 doesn’t disappoint and finds Blair showcasing a creative blend of old and new. Playing tasty lead melodies on the bass along with prominent bass rhythms evoke shades of Wayman Tisdale and Stanley Clarke in their heyday. Influences from Earth Wind and Fire and Chicago to The Ohio Players and Parliament Funkadelic are evident in this gumbo, with a sprinkle of classic jazz and fresh interpretations on big-band arranging with a funky low end.As usual, the majority of tracks on this project are full and lush, only this time with a deeper level of horn work, with some songs utilizing a full horn section reminiscent of Chicago. The first track off the LP, “Relentless” is a funky smash, with super-tight Brecker- Brothers- style horns and heavy bass in your face setting the stage for the fusion-fired tracks that follow. “Hello Beautiful”, featuring Grammy award winning guitarist Freddie Fox features a gorgeous arrangement and horn section sweet enough to taste. Other standouts include the title track, “Red Tiger” featuring virtuoso piano work from Blair himself, and “Ember Glow”, featuring scintillating horn work from Donald Hayes along with Blair’s mentor and inspiration Najee.Blair Bryant is making another statement with this project, and the future of Jazz bass is secure. ”Red Tiger” is another showcase from a rising Contemporary Jazz superstar.
